Austria Gets Big
Urban Art Forms, an Austrian festival that takes place at the beginning of August, will be the country’s biggest ever outdoor dance music event Words: Terry Church Austria will hold its biggest-ever outdoor dance music event from Friday 5th – 7th August at the world-famous Zipferzone Wiesen. Clearly the country’s dance scene is burgeoning. Wiesen is the country’s most prestigious music venue - a gigantic steel tent and an architectural masterpiece - and will form the perfect backdrop for the three-day Urban Art Forms festival. Festival organiser Christian Lakatos said securing the Wiesen arena for the event was a real coup for the Austrian dance scene. He said: "Wiesen is one of the most famous festival venues in Europe, and musicians from all over the world have played there. "We’ve spent a lot of time and money on the venue, and it will have one of the best sound systems in the world, a huge laser and light show, and a beautiful camping arena." Audiovisual The UAF festival will also feature Europe’s biggest-ever video installation says Lakatos, with over 60 video and slide projectors planned for the event. "When we started Urban Art Forms the club night we always had a lot of video walls and live visuals," said Lakatos. "We feel they’re very important for the dance scene, as great music combined with spectacular visuals always enhances a dancing environment." Urban Art Forms has only been running since 2004 as a breaks and drum & bass night, that started as an amalgamation of several local sound systems in the town of St. Pölten. However, after a string of successful club events, UAF’s organisers decided to put on this festival to push its concept to the masses. Meph13, a DJ and a partner of UAF explains their unique concept: "With UAF we mix up nu skool breaks and drum & bass with the best national and international DJs, and try to design events that are very exciting and unusual for this somewhat traditional country," he said. Tradition Although Austria is a small country, it’s always had a long tradition of dance music. "About a decade ago techno was really popular here," says Lakatos. "But over the years the whole scene has changed, as drum & bass and other styles of dance music have grown and developed. "Currently, techno, d&b, goa and trance are all equally popular, and it’s because people are really open-minded here – they don’t just like one form of music. "Every weekend international acts play at raves all over Austria, and there’s also a mushrooming web community, with local sites such as www.drumandbass.at, and www.technoboard.at attracting thousands of Austrian dance music fans every day. "Compared to the number of people living in Austria, the dance music scene here is actually really huge!" he added.
