Gewinnspiel: 1 x 2 Karten Ryan Crosson Ryan Crosson crafts techno and house tied to the historical precedent set in his native city of Detroit by classic artists such as Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin, and Moodyman. Still, Crosson owes just as much to the constant exchange beween Detroit and Germany, equally taking his cues from artists like Pantytec, Ricardo Villalobos, and Thomas Brinkmann, to shape his own musical output. Situated loosely between these two organizing poles, as are many of his American peers currently living in Berlin, Crosson stands out from most of his fellow producers in two key respects: delivering a fetishistic attention to programming and sound design, and embodying a ceaseless energy that carries itself from the studio directly into his live set and DJ performances. Ryan Crosson consistently chooses to steer away from the predictable circuit of so-called "underground" club hits, instead favoring a process of constant renewal and return both to early influential material and to emerging sounds that depart from hegemonic trends. Likewise, Crosson's production and sampling practices consistently depart from the world of electronic music by accessing histories of sound linked to militant black jazz, proto-disco, fusion, and west african indigenous music. After releasing acclaimed material on diverse and groundbreaking labels like m-nus, Telegraph, Trapez, and Wagon Repair, Crosson has fully given himself over to a life of touring and performance that keeps a steady focus on both the avant-garde aesthetics of and deeply emotional bonds to dance music subculture. Making the move to Berlin in 2007 has opened up residencies for Crosson at Alte Borse in Zurich, Arena Club in Berlin, and of course the notorious summer weekly party, Soulshower, at Club Der Visionaere. http://www.beatportplayer.com/?playerId=708305 --- Slick seit mittlerweile fast 10 jahren treibt slick sein unwesen im wiener techno-dickicht. vorwiegend als dj und promoter in diversen wiener clubs, in grauer vorzeit aber auch schon mal als wohnzimmerplattenladen-besitzer. sein gegenwärtiges lieblingsspielzeug nennt sich resolut und findet monatlich mit illustren gästen und seinen resoluten mitstreitern in der fluc wanne statt. auf die frage was er denn so auflegt, lächelt er gerne verhalten und gibt den hinweis, dass es doch eh morgen schon wieder anders heißen wird. www.myspace.com/slickresolut |

ryan crosson lessizmore interview vom oktober 2009
Can you introduce yourself in a few words? A. Hi, my name is Ryan What do you like the most about your job? The people I meet. It’s great to find someone that shares the same enthusiasm as I do about all types of music, but to find them by the hundreds each weekend is something really special to me. Each piece of music effects each person differently and it’s interesting to see on a weekly basis. What are your best and worst memories? Regarding dance music or life in general? I have too many of both. Some of the best memories I’ve had in the past few years have been our Need I Say More open air during DEMF, Tuesdays a Club der Visionaere and extended weekend visits to London. Each of these three recurring events has helped me get closer to many of my best friends. What was your first record and how old where you? The first record I purchased? Or the first record I released? Please apply the appropriate answer. First record I ever bought I was “Knights of the Jaguar” by Rolando. It was my first trip to Memories&Melodies in Detroit and I was buying a little bit of everything because I was just learning to play. One of the shop guys was playing it in the back “Dance Zone” and I had to have it. It’s still on of my all time favorite dance tracks. I was 18 years old. First release was on mp3 for Pheek’s Archipel label, first full vinyl EP was Say So on Trapez Ltd. Both were released in 2005. I was 23 at the time and had no clue what I was doing (still don’t). Pheek, Brian Kage and Riley Reinhold were so helpful and supportive in my infant stages, I’ll never forget that What is your cult track? It’s tough to say if I really have one or not. I’m always listening to different genres and I’ll find a few that I focus on for a while and then I’ll bounce in a different direction. There are tracks that I tend to play often in a DJ set but I wouldn’t call them a cult track for me. A few may be Marine Girls - “On My Mind”, Sheila E “Love Bizarre”, or Tesfa Maryam Kidane - “Heywete”. But the favorites are constantly changing. The most recent record or artist you fell in love with? Over the summer I was listening to a lot of new material from Sergio Giorgini. He has a track titled “Full Grown Man” that I think is amazing. Michael J. Collins and Deniz Kurtel have owned my ears a lot as well in recent weeks. I was listening to Young Marble Giants before my Spotify failed, so now I’m searching for the vinyl online but it’s tough to come by. If you had to be a city, what would you be and why? That’s a tough one, a mix of New York and Zurich could work for me. New York for the architecture and food and Zurich for the nature surrounding the city. Seeing the lake and mountains driving out Zurich is so beautiful. But the city couldn’t be populated like New York that’d be too much. Sorry, weak answer. An unknown destination that makes you dream? Outer space. It’s so massive nobody can ever grasp how huge it truly is and it’s still expanding. There are so many possibilities of existence and so much we don’t know and will never know. Gases, particles and explosions form beautiful events that we can photograph through a telescope but it would be amazing to see these events closer. What is the strangest thing you ever done? No comment What is the strangest place you know? Seth’s mind. What would you bring with you in outer space? Depends on how long I would be gone. Could I bring my girlfriend? In addition to her, definitely an assortment of books, mp3 player, a small video camera, a box of Take 5 candy bars, a field recorder w/ headphones. I’d probably forget most of the stuff I SHOULD want to bring. If you had to do another job, what would it be? Not really sure. I’m trying to figure that out at the moment. Before I moved to Europe I was selling used powder process machinery. Not the most interesting of jobs but if you find the proper niche, it can be extremely lucrative. I wouldn’t want to go back to that but feel I could if I absolutely needed to What does Lessizmore represents for you? To me, Lessizmore has represented a group of like-minded individuals who attempt to forward dance music culture through various forms. When I first met Pierre and Jess they were just doing parties but now they have evolved Lessizmore to a record & net label as well, and more. What is currently happening for you? After a low-key summer things are picking up again. Soul Shower @ CDV is almost at a close but our Jak the Box and Visionquest residencies are still ongoing. Do you have any new projects? I have a new project called Birds & Souls with Sergio Giorgini that has been an amazing experience. We’ve finished a mega bomb already and have 2 more tracks in the works. Hopefully that can be wrapped up soon. A track called Metro Bunnker will be on the next Hooksey Compilation for EKLO. I’m a part of a double CD compilation on Circus Company releasing in October. Seth Troxler and I completed a remix for Radio Slave and I just finished another for Voodeux on Mothership… A new DJ tool project featuring Butane, Sean O’Neil and myself is set to launch for digital release in September. Cesar Merveille and I have teamed up for some new tracks as well. For additional solo projects, one EP for certain going to Cityfox which we hope to release by February. I’d like to also wrap up one each for Wagon Repair and Spectral before I start working on my album in 2010. |
