Have you ever dreamt of dancing for 12 hours non-stop under a mantel of stars to the best music chosen by the hottest D.J.s of the moment…? Yes, it does sound like a car ad, but the fact is that this is Creamfields. A real musical experience in an idyllic location, creating a very special atmosphere where all that matters is to dance and enjoy the best artists from all over the world. This festival originates in Cream, the Liverpool club, which since it opened in 1992, has been a global pioneer on the dance scene. Thanks to its success, it has expanded into a company that promotes festivals and events, a record label, a booking agency, a radio station, a merchandising firm and TV production company. Its activities are carried out in countries as diverse as Australia, Argentina, South Africa, Japan, Peru, Argentina, Greece, New Zealand, the Philippines, Slovakia, Turkey, Egypt, Russia, Poland, the US and several European countries. Creamfields, the festival, has been successfully exported to these countries and now it’s reached the Iberian peninsula with the help of Sinnamon Promotions. Cuevas de Almanzora, and in particular Villaricos beach on the coast of Almeria, will be the setting for this event to be held on the 12th of August 2006. The town of Villaricos, known by the Carthaginians as Baria, also has a magnificent past with several archaeological sites that have recently been restored. This town belongs to the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora. There are no direct bus or train routes to Playa de Villaricos, so access is via Cuevas de Almanzora which is 5 km away, or via Águilas, 15 km away. Cuevas del AlmanzoraLocated in the North-East corner of the province of Almería, the town of Cuevas del Almanzora, with almost 10,000 inhabitants, ranks seventh in size of the 103 different municipalities in Almería. It is a municipality leads in the North and along the coast to the town of El Pozo del Esparto; a place where the rocks are still reminiscent of the constant arrival of North-African pirates, who found potable water in the area and could reach it easily because it was so distant from the watchtowers and coastal defences. . The inland areas of the region flourished with the arrival of the Arabs, as they left the coast and replaced mining activities with agriculture, irrigated by the waters of the Almanzora. The heritage of the Muslim period can be found in the local place names, such as Alhanchete and Arnilla, amongst many others. In Medieval times, the local natural caves take on major significance and they then lend their name to the whole area. After the Muslim uprising against the Christians in 1569 and their subsequent expulsion, Cuevas was repopulated by 200 families who came from the Murcia area. The population of Cuevas in the 17th and 18th centuries was a feudal society under the domination of the Marquis of Vélez, and it was supported by a largely agricultural economy. The contemporary era began in 1811 with the abolition of feudalism. It was in 1838 with the discovery of an extremely rich seam of silver-bearing lead sulphide that the development of the mining industry started in the area, and this constituted its greatest period of development and demographic growth. In the eighties, the area underwent another burst of population growth. The most recent census indicates 9,125 inhabitants, supported by a gradual development of irrigated agriculture and early crops under plastic, as well as modest advances in tourism along the coast. Places to Visit In Villaricos, an important archaeological site because of the primitive metallurgical cultures that were located at the mouth of the Almanzora, there is a small fishing harbour and a neoclassic coastal defence castle from the 18th century. To the north of Cuevas, some way away from the Almanzora river, lies Huércal-Overa, on the border of the region of Murcia. Its historical buildings include the Castle of Santa Bárbara, with parts dating from the 13th century, and the church of the Assumption, with valuable carvings and altarpieces. Holy Week in Huércal-Overa has been declared an event of national interest, and is famous for the splendour and beauty of its religious images. Many of these are examples of the school of Granada and of the master of the genre, Salzillo. The Beaches A walk along the 14 kilometres of coastline demonstrates that it is possible to find large, peaceful and open beaches that contrast with the coves and cliffs that are hidden behind the proud, rocky outcrops. Archaeological Sites La Zájara I and Zájara II caves. (Palaeolithic) El Despoblado de Almizaraque (The “Wilderness of Almizaraque”), (Bronze Age) Las Herrerías (the Ironworks.) Fuente Álamo (The Álamo Spring), (Metal Age) Sierra de Almagro. Cabezo del Oficio, (Metal Age) Sierra de Castillarico Campos. Villaricos. The Castle. We also recommend visiting the wetland, located on the outskirts of the town, and the Caves of Calguerín |
