ZITAT(pressetext)
It is massive. It is fresh. And it is ready to rule London: The electronic music underground of Graz/Austria will be presented in Great Britain for the first time ever at September 15th 2004. 20 artists and DJs will rock the dancefloors of London´s Electrowerkz.

Dance music from Austria? If you´re thinking about relaxed, loungy grooves from labels like Vienna-based G-Stone or Klein – think again. Over the last few years an extremely innovative scene of young labels, crews, producers and DJs has developed in Graz, Austria´s second biggest city in the south of the country, producing music that is more diverse, more experimental, rougher to some extent, with a touch of weirdness sometimes. A scene that is working in a context that has always been internationally oriented. For an artist or a label in Graz it is quite normal to think big, to operate across the borders, to be in close contact with the electronic music scenes in Slovenia, Croatia, Germany or Italy or with the bustling scene in Brighton and London.

Labels like Widerstand successfully operate in the global breakcore scene, Electronic Beat Lounge events attract techno stars from all over the world and Binder & Krieglstein´s fantastically strange Electro-Swing has received enthusiastic reviews from Alaska to Australia and back. Innovative clubs like the p.p.c. or the Postgarage bring local acts together with international stars all year long. And last, but definitely not least, with springone, -two, -tree and -four the Graz based label Zeiger has created Austria´s largest festival for electronic music, bringing more than 100 DJs on five days and four nights to seven locations in the city every year. Artists like Jazzie B or Gilles Peterson have performed at the spring-festivals, labels like Good Looking or K7 have been regular guests.

It is in this context that many young labels like Houseverbot, Luv, Lee or Soundsilo have flourished in the city, bringing their first releases to the clubs in Graz and the rest of the country, covering a wide musical spectrum from house, techno, drum´n´bass to break- and clickcore and noise. It is a scene that is ready to be discovered, a scene ready to stay beyond the hype, a scene ready for world domination.

Believe!

Artist Infos:

Binder & Krieglstein

After introducing their debut album ´International´ at springtwo, Binder & Krieglstein presented their brand new album ´Trip´ at springfour. The current single ´Alles Verloren´ continues the idiosyncratic sound first spun out on their debut album. In his studio, drummer Rainer Binder Krieglstein with the help of several guests has written 14 new tracks, 14 irresistible grooves, 14 new treasures that will be transformed into a live show with Uwe Bubik (Bass and Vocals), Maki (Vocals) and sometimes Cheever (Guitar) as a guest.

Dr. Nachtstrom

Dr. Nachtstrom started making music in 1995 as a bedroom producer. After countless demos he was recognized by the label Mego, which released his first vinyl, called ´17 songs after midnight´ in 1999. The remix-CD ´N8chtstrom remixed´ followed on the label Park, featuring Gerhard Potuznik, Hans Platzgumer and shooting star Binder & Krieglstein amongst others. Dr. Nachtstrom has put out many pieces on compilations and has also worked for a movie called ´Im Anfang war der Blick´. Right now he's collaborating with Christian Fuchs and other musicians as ´Bunny Lake´. His brandnew 12´ ´Nachtstrom EP´ has just been released on Zeiger Records.

Eiterherd

In 1996 Eiterherd founded the first electronic music label in Graz, Widerstand Records. The first release was a limited (500) split vinyl 12” featuring Gwal and Eiterherd. In 1998 Eiterherd released his first full-length album, using samples from the film ´1984´. The album was released as a co- production with Praxis Records (UK) and was titled ´1984 vs. 1999´. Worldwide communication became more important than local activities and he played live all over Europe and did the Widerstand/PeaceOff USA Tour in 2001 featuring Rotator, Slam and Eiterherd himself. Eiterherd has also promoted many events in his hometown Graz.

Any Maniac

Any Maniac, a young musician out of Graz, has started making music at the age of nine. He moved towards electronic music with the help of his brother. He plays any kind, from HipHop to Drum´n´Bass and Jungle as well as Breakcore,. Most of what he plays at his live set was written during the last two years, heavily influenced by the Widerstand-parties in Graz. Any Maniac will release a split 12inch on Widerstand Records (Widerstand 12) in late 2004 and has proven to rock the house at parties in his hometown Graz. Watch Out!

Electronic Beat Lounge

The electronic beat lounge (ebl) was established by Christian Gerlich and Christoph Risco. After working as techno promoters during the last 10 years they started their own label in 2003 – ebl music.
The first release was written and produced by Lori J. Ward from Vancouver.
The music is mellow/groovy/downtempo and totally different than Lori´s worldwide acclaimed sets as techno/house DJane.

Bitz & Puschmann

Since 2001, Mattias ´Bitz´ Scherz und Florian Puschmann, on behalf of DJ-collective Houseverbot, have been providing the Graz club scene with sounds. Their love for abstract and/or minimal Electro/House/techno made them resident DJs at all the Studio 672-parties in ppc and earned them bookings in Cologne, Munich, Slovenia and Vienna. Their project Houseverbot that includes MaJule and Sterling has developed into a label whose purpose is to transport the city´s sound outwards. They also promote a monthly club in Forum Stadtpark and present Graz-based DJs to the public under the name ´Minimal Housing´. Only recently they rocked the city of Cologne during the c/o pop – festival.

Soundsilo

Renoa, Hadrian, M.A.R.S. and Smyre first met in 1996 and formed Soundsilo two years later. They started as DJs and have widened their live performances to a combination of electronic and classic instruments ( drums, djembe e.g.). Their club style is ´new-funky-tribal house mixed with tech-jazz elements´ - pure dancing pleasure. They have released several tracks (Natal Rec, Zeiger e.g.). Currently they´re working on a remix to be released on Firn´s new album on Natal Records and the second release on Houseverbot Records. Swing´n´Dance.

Lenz & Simon/off

Lenz und Simon/off are the men behind the label Lee. After the January release of ´Lee 01 - Lenz/Winterstrand - Split 7´ , their next release with tracks from E.stonji, remixes from Scarcubem and other international acts is anticipated shortly. Also due any minute: ´Houseverbot 01 – Soon´ EP, Simon/off´s first solo release.
