Hailing from the UK, Andy Compton founded The Rurals in 1994. Since then, they have released more than 50 EPs and six full-length albums on DIY, Large, Seasons and their own imprint Peng. With more than a decade behind the decks, Andy has traveled the world as a purveyor of the deepest, most soulful grooves around. Devonshire’s original deep house collective, The Rurals started their own label (Rural Promotions) way back in 1994. Since that time, they've completed and released over fifty EPs and five full-length albums. Andy Compton, the backbone of The Rurals, began his musical career back in 1989 playing guitar in a Nottingham-based funk rock band. He left to pursue dance music following the now famous Castle Morton gig, where he stumbled across the DIY tent and fell in love with deep house. After parting with his band, Andy went back to his roots in the South West, which is when the Rural concept began to come together. After organizing and playing several crazy all night parties in rural locations, which were booking quality DJs from all over the UK, Andy decided to join a local DJ agency. At the same time, he teamed up with Pete Morris, a top keyboard player who had just moved back from Leicester. They hired a local studio and started buying equipment. Soon they had enough material for their first release, the “Space Funk EP.” Playing out at gigs in the Warehouse Plymouth, they met resident DJs Matt C and Dean Westcott, who soon became interested in the Rural vibe and joined them in the studio recording under the name Rainbow Garden. The productions were laid on cassette and sent numerous labels. DIY was the first to reply, securing “The Groove Orchard EP.” Following this release, The Rurals wanted to record on their own label. They joined forces with Ideal and formed The Rurals / Ideal Label. A few sweaty years, eleven twelve-inches and one album later, they finally formed their own imprint, Peng. With the help of a new in-house vocalist Marie, who added her sweet, soulful vocals to their sound, gave The Rurals a fresh, unique quality. Launched in February of 1999, Peng is now their home and main outlet for the nu soul/jazzy house sound that they've perfected. In addition, The Rurals have recorded for 8th Day, DIY, Hed Kandi House Afrika, Large, Seasons, Society Hill and Viva. At present, Andy and The Rurals bunch have just completed their seventh album Messages, scheduled for a release on Peng in the spring of 2004. |
