Introduction

Many people, specially artists, are greatly surprised in their first visit to the Groove Parade. “What on earth is this?” is what first comes to mind, no wonder considering that in the many years of rave culture, few events that could so much turn upside down the outlines of the electronic community had taken place. It is an unprecedented techno gathering in the midle of Los Monegros desert in Spain.
The Groove Parade is neither a rave as such although it has many of its elements –the celebration of a far away party in the middle of nowhere, the adventure factor, the journey, driving for miles towards novelty or to see a particular DJ- nor a traditional festival. Although it is held by an organization and counts on safety measures as well as requiring the purchase of an admission ticket and the traditional services delivered at a festival, the Groove Parade always offers rather more. No wonder thus it has become the most important open air dance event in the south of Europe as well as one of the most awaited dates by the current high riding DJs. All this in the middle of the desert surrounded by dust and darkness. A definite adventure.

The Groove Parade saw the light nine years ago as a spontaneous party after one night at the club Florida 135 in Fraga (Spain) –the best club in Spain, a must for the tours of most relevant DJs worldwide- when the organizers plus a few friends decided to keep the party alive in an improvised desert spot. This same idea revived year after year and also grew bigger every time: At the moment more than 20,000 people congregate every July at that undetermined desert spot where their only intention is to dance, create a community and indulge.

Throughout its eight years of history –2003 will hold the ninth staging- the Groove Parade has hosted in its cabins djs as influential as Jeff Mills, Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Claudio Coccolutto, Fabio, Jazzanova, Francesco Farfa, John Acquaviva, Slam, Stacey Pullen or Christian Smith, as well as the best artists from the Spainsh techno scene. All them distributed into five stages confirm the growth and consolidation of a unique party, one third of it being a festival, one third a rave and finally one third a verbena or a typical rural Spanish festivity where the gastronomy element is central: all attendants get a free dinner with their ticket made out of typical local products.

Maybe this is why there is no match for the Groove Parade anywhere in the world.
