Interwiew with Eddie
Hey Eddie! What are you up to right now? Musically as well as... all the rest. Musically~ coming out with a new album titled “Welcome To My World” (2/23 in Japan, and early April for Europe on my CityBoy Music label). I’m still doing what I’ve been doing all these years, TechnoSoul. I’m also working on a line of apparel & accessories called Detroit Wax. Your musical oeuvre counts more than 150 tracks and quite a lot of remixes as well - do you remember each and every piece of it? Mostly, I remember things when I hear it. About 99% off the top of my head. You have been doing your own label City Boy for more than a decade now - can you tell us some of the experiences you have made in all these years? CityBoy Music has been out for 17 years now. It’s a label that’s not been prostituted with a bunch of mediocre tracks, or multitude of tracks. I’ve introduced a lot of new artists through the label. My first artist on CityBoy was a recording with Bill Beaver, one of the original singers in the group “Members of the House”. Mike Huckaby was the first dj artist to do a remix on my label, of the track with Bill Beaver. I helped establish Amp Fiddler and Detroit Beat Down Sounds. I was honored in 2003 at the Detroit Historical Museum’s tribute to Detroit Techno, for being one of the originators of Techno. You have always been very critical about the sellout of Detroit Techno in Europe. What do you think of the situation today? To be underground, you need to give your music away for free. Anytime you sell your music, at any price, you become commercial. I wasn’t critical, I was trying to preserve the bastardization of our grooves and our historical black music. What I play as one of the originators of this style of music is Techno and TechnoSoul. Compared to what people call Techno in Europe, it’s a whole different ballgame. And that ballgame is soul-less. Some people shouldn’t make music, especially if there’s no soul to it. What sounds can we expect from a DJ set of yours in 2007, more than 25 years after you started spinning records? TechnoSoul, Baby! |
