Bio David Phillips

David Phillips? Just ask anyone who was in Space or Dc10 in Ibiza the last few summers.

Born in Bristol, David spent most of his adolescent years in Marbella, Spain, his parents having moved there when he was 12. This place, among other things, was famous for its wild nightlife and by the age of 18 David was already helping run a bar together with school friends.`It was a bit of a rockers` bar as I recall. The back of Marbella port was quite dodgy at night, full of distinctly un-Marbella like folk in an area full of bars and people hanging around, sat outside drinking on parked cars. Fights everywhere. The mayor came down one night after he`d just been on TV saying the area was full of low-lifes and that he planned on levelling the place. There was a full blown riot. But it was a brilliant bar and I definitely got the flavour for working in the nightlife`.

After a brief spell working back in England and travelling he set down in Ibiza, in need of some new scenery and a summer job.`I had passed through Ibiza in 1985 with my family. We only stayed a day but I remember all the mad looking characters walking around and later a full blown carnival procession going on in the middle of town (they had stumbled in on Ku`s legendary Brazil night). It had all got a bit out of hand in Marbella and I got myself away. Now I was about to start working in Ibiza of all places…..no comment`.

After a month of getting to know the people and places he landed a job as barman in one of the the best clubs in the world, Space. There he worked for 3 summers and now travelling barman was his trade, working winters in London and Barcelona. While in Barcelona he teamed up with one of Space`s resident Dj`s, Jeremy Norris, and together they opened Flat Cat, a bar tucked away in a posh area of Barcelona. It quickly became a hangout for ‘Ibiza Heads’ and the city’s movers and groovers. The two began promoting their own nights in clubs such as Moog, La Via, OnOff, Apolo/ Nitsa and were the first to use the venue now widely regarded as the city`s hottest club; La Terraza. All this time David had one eye on the decks and was getting into some of the more innovative genres flying around at the time; The nascent West Coast and Nu Skool breaks scene, Drum & Bass, the whole Wall of Sound – Skint - Mo`Wax phenomenon….

`I was never a real house-head early on. Still a bit of a rocker from the days in Marbella and had been going to Funk and Hip-Hop nights when I was back in the Uk. I remember how all those nights emptied out when people started heading out of town to raves. I was aware it was going on but not really there enough to get into it. I learned a lot from people like Jeremy and Lee Coombs (now a key member of the world breaks/ house/ electro scene) who WERE there and gradually pieced things together. Although the stuff I play nowadays is based around a house tempo, it’s from influences I picked up from before then, listening to rocky bands, dub reggae, film soundtracks, hip-hop. All with a twisted take on the Balearic thing. Widely appealing but full of mischief´.

Soon David was back in Ibiza, and no longer a barman by trade. First playing down at Sa Trincha, the best known beach bar at Salinas when Jonathan was away, then soon after a regular in Pacha’s Funky Room and on the roof terrace for Ministry of Sound and Rennaissance. Still keeping his hand in the bar section he was also resident down at one of the top bars in Ibiza port, The Rock bar. A popular hangout for the more clued-up clubbers, the most colourful characters on the island and the top brass of the world clubbing industry.

1998 – 2001: After a winter playing at various breakbeat nights in Bristol and London and a spell as resident of the notorious and fabled Manumission Motel (he is vague with details of events here), he was singled out by Danny Whittle (now Pacha music director) and former CREAM founder Darren Hughes who was about to open the Superclub HOME in London. There he was full time resident for two and a half years helping program the line-ups and playing alongside some of the best and most upfront names in the business, a high point being playing warm up sets at Homelands for Artists such as Moby, Pulp, Josh Wink, Orbital, BT. Despite the premature demise of the club, David had gained a wealth of experience living and working in the Uk club scene for the first time. A regular at The End and Fabric, living and dj-ing in Brighton and doing part-time work for Skint records clearing samples. By now he was also playing gigs further afield in the Uk and Europe including a full time residency in a top new club in Zurich, Q.

2002: He still continued working in Ibiza, resident in Pacha`s funky room, The Rock Bar and spots at Manumission. He was offered a 7 week stint in DC10, for the world famous all day Monday session, Circo Loco. Here he could really cut loose with the music…`I had always leaned toward a bit more of a breaksy, rocky sound and Ibiza`s dancefloors for a few years had been quite formulaic. It was house and only house, albeit some of the the best you could hear. But things have changed the last couple of years with live rock, breaks and electro influencing things, and the whole 2Many Djs / Glimmers approach to playing opening things right up. I found I could really play what I wanted, Dc10 is no big secret anymore but it’s still an underground club and there is NO holding back in that place at any level!´.

Darren Hughes and the WeLove crew (now responsible for the 22 hour Sundays at Space) were onto this and by the end of 2002 they had snapped him up as their new worldwide, year-round resident. Summer 2003 they booked him for the evening set inside Space every week alongside the up and coming wunderkind James Zabeila. The change of sound from these two drew the crowds in as the terrace wound things up outside. Summers 2003,4 and 5 have come and gone and David has rocked Space week in week out, putting together sets of some of the most forward-thinking sounds in the club scene previously overlooked in Ibiza`s sunny environment, yet still capturing the imagination of the die-hard house fans that the island continues to attract. `At first I couldn`t believe what I was getting away with in there. Then as weeks went by I learned how far I could push it and people seemed to be enjoying it regardless of the genre. Also the system inside Space is something else, records take on a whole new dynamic. Musically this year was the best I’ve seen since I came here in 1992. Since electro came to the fore it has opened the door for me to really cut loose in Space.`

Having been based in winter in Zurich, touring for Ulises Braun’s Sleepless Nights (responsible for the Ibiza reunion that goes on there), resident at Club Q and a regular on the scene there. He also remains a resident for We Love events worldwide and will this winter (2005/6) be re-locating to London.
