COLOMA - Dovetail:
Alex Paulick and Rob Taylor, alias Coloma, took their time chiselling their latest album into shape. Two years down the line and the two Englishmen, based in Cologne, Germany, are emerging with their third long player DOVETAIL, with KLEIN Records as their new label. Coloma are still preoccupied with reduction. Nevertheless, "Dovetail" is a completely different album from its predecessors Silverware (2002) and Finery (2003) – and is still good for a few surprises. Indeed, this time Coloma have eschewed most of the minimal-electronic programming that dominated the previous records in favour of realtime recordings of guest musicians. On “Dovetail”, Coloma’s proven mixture of melodic pop, multifaceted lyrics and bold abstraction is more clearly defined than ever before. The album was recorded by Tobias Levin (known for his work with Kante and To Rococo Rot) at the legendary Conny Plank Studio in a three-day marathon, continuing at Levin's Electric Avenue in Hamburg. The band, a conglomeration of noteworthy musicians: On double-drums N. Churn and Thomas Klein (of Kreidler – for whom Paulick played bass for three years). Christoph Clöser (Bohren und der Club of Gore) on Steinway grand and electric pianos, Morris McTear on organ and synthesisers, Gabriele Jüttner on vibraphone – and the icing on the cake: A classic, three-piece horn section. Keep an eye on the upcoming „No Moving Parts EP“ with Remixes by Andre Kraml, Justus Köhncke, Erobique and Superpitcher. SOFA SURFERS - The 4th Studio Album: Three and a half years after „Encounters“, the Viennese quartet releases a new album that largely dispenses with computers and effects devices and that features a single voice. The aim for the new album was to stress the band character of the Sofa Surfers and to go back to basics: “What we were after was a sound that didn’t need any effects to hide behind. We wanted to have the sound sources to be presented in a rather naked manner, so to say.“ Sparsely arranged for guitar, bass, and drums only, the album’s opening might well originate from some dynamic postrock band or, as Wolfgang Schlögl had envisaged the band during recording “like a hardcore band after the noise has abated“. Just when listeners have adapted their expectations to this exciting sonic environment, however, a shift occurs: quite suddenly a voice drifts in, shortly grating against the music, before it beautifully falls in tune with it. It is the voice of singer, dancer, and choreographer Mani Obeya who, after various adventures in London and New York, has recently alighted in Vienna. Not only does his voice lend the new album a soulful warmth, it also helps to give it a clear structure. The album defies definition – somehow melancholic, warm, yet gloomy in parts, intimate...the music of the Sofa Surfers 2005 is still what it has always been – a musical and emotional no man’s land. Some words, however, force themselves on listeners – very intense, very beautiful and not quite like anything else. BAUCHKLANG – Many People: The vocal groove project will release their new album „Many People“ in January 2006. This is their first longplayer since 2001s widely praised and adored „Jamzero“ full-length debut that immediately sent waves of excitement across Europe. Building and crossing bridges over such styles as Ragga, Drum&Bass, Hip-Hop and Electronic; Bauchklang has created an energy and a presence that leaves a positive vibe and a revolutionary buzz swirling around anyone who comes in to contact with them. TRIO EXKLUSIV – International Standards EP 2: This is the second EP from Trio Exklusiv plus additional remixes by Glasgow based OPTIMO - the original versions are taken from the album ‚International Standards’ (Kl072) which was produced by Patrick Pulsinger. Two OPTIMO Remixes are featured on this 5-Track EP - beside the Groover ‚Let Fat In’ the more experimental ‚Undo The Twist’ and „Honalee" featuring Louie Austen on Vocals. Twitch from OPTIMO says. "I hope my personal contribution is showing that lots of music that people don’t regard as dance music can actually be [danced to], and that it is not necessary to play one style of music or one tempo all night." Word International Standards EP 1 - Reactions: Like it all. Great disco dub. love the original. Really good. Daddy G ‘Massive Attack’ Super cool original…killer stuff from Klein again. Hooray!!! Jonathan Burnip ‘Soul Jazz Soundsystem’ Very good work from Trio Exklusiv & Idjut Boys. The time is right for this vibe. Robin Lee ‘Faze Action Idjut Boys mixes are amazing! Trevor Jackson ‘Playgroup’ Doors Open my fave — just groove on it, yes. Rob Birch ‘Stereo MCs’ MAURACHER – Kissing My Grandma: „I could have just as well approached this new record exactly the same way as the last one, and it would’ve been easy for me to live up to people’s preconceived expectations. But I’d prefer my new album to elicit such strong reactions that some listeners feel moved to turn it off halfway through, rather than it being slapped on as a form of indistinct background noise. I wish for anything but stagnation.“ Mauracher´s new Album “Kissing My Grandma” will be released on the Kind Label (a subdivision of KLEIN Records) October 21st in GAS.
