Gewinnspiel: 2 x 2 Karten Biography: Stewart Walker grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. In the early 90's, he looked beyond America‘s derivative Pop scene to focus on emerging UK Pop musicians then experimenting with electronic effects and rhythms, noting specifically the Manchester sound of Happy Mondays and Stone Roses, and eventually switching to the pure electronic sounds of 808 State, and LFO. After finishing school in1992, Walker went to England to experience the musical culture firsthand along with with his first experiences in big Techno parties. Upon his return to the US he exchanged his guitar for an analog synthesizer and thus began his first years of experimentation in an intimate but limited studio forming the basis of his direction and musical identity. He moved to Wisconsin in1995 where he met other electronic musicians and finally committed to pursuing his musical path. The first release, “Amphetamine Sulphate“ on Matrix in late 1997 experimented with tight, minimal bass and percussion programming akin to Dan Bell. The second release, “Horizontal Transfer“ on Deepfried was much less obvious about influences, the music more texture-based with patterns flowing in and out of the center. This increased depth and apparent home-listening capability - to listen to the music in a home environment as well as in a club - created the dichotomy that set the path he followed for several subsequent releases. In Walker‘s own words, "each track begins as a rhythmic idea I deconstruct into individual components: i.e. instead of using a single kick drum in a track, 2 or 3 are used sometimes layering the sounds in order to gain more potential dynamics from a usually static sound. Overt melodies are rarely used. Instead, accidental melodies form automatically between sounds. Any pitched accompaniment is chosen simply to reinforce the inherent sound of the track. Put simply: the rhythm is the melody". These ideas came to fruition with Stewart's release, "Artificial Music for Artificial People" on Cristian Vogel's Mosquito imprint. Each recording implemented the combination of texture and rhythm that he had previously sought. In 1999, Walker brought his sounds on tour around the US and Europe to demonstrate the same degree and dynamics that DJs have but within Walker‘s live performance. A short tour of Germany eventually culminated in his debut Tresor EP “Nothing Produces Stark Imagery” and his debut album on Force Inc. later that year. In the year 2000, in addition to his "Reformation of Negative Space" EP, Walker reserved an extended residency here in Berlin to concentrate on and record an album exclusive for Tresor. ‘Music is my love. Spirals first, please spirals first’. |
