About Eddie!

As one of the Techno originators in Detroit's dance scene during the mid 80's, Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes directly paves the way for other now legendary Techno artists. He also single-handedly establishes a new genre of dance music, 'Techno-Soul', by combining deep, soulful house sounds with the more digital, electronic elements of his own hometown. The broadening scope of electronic music as an integral component of 21st century life, is due in part to the uncompromising efforts of Detroit techno originators like Eddie Fowlkes. Their inventive visions not only help to initiate other styles of popular electronica, such as jungle and trance, but also to catapult dance/street music into a multi-million dollar industry. Although the spiritually-charged foundations of this movement are always under the threat of corruption by auspicious promoters, DJs, and producers, Eddie remains constantly rooted by his genuine love for the music, which you can hear on his label City Boy Recordings.

Interwiew with Eddie

Hey Eddie! What are you up to right now? Musically as well as... all the
rest.

Musically~ coming out with a new album titled “Welcome To My World” (2/23 in Japan, and early April for Europe on my CityBoy Music label). I’m still doing what I’ve been doing all these years, TechnoSoul. I’m also working on a line of apparel & accessories called Detroit Wax.

Your musical oeuvre counts more than 150 tracks and quite a lot of
remixes as well - do you remember each and every piece of it?

Mostly, I remember things when I hear it. About 99% off the top of my head.

You have been doing your own label City Boy for more than a decade now -
can you tell us some of the experiences you have made in all these years?

CityBoy Music has been out for 17 years now. It’s a label that’s not been prostituted with a bunch of mediocre tracks, or multitude of tracks. I’ve introduced a lot of new artists through the label. My first artist on CityBoy was a recording with Bill Beaver, one of the original singers in the group “Members of the House”. Mike Huckaby was the first dj artist to do a remix on my label, of the track with Bill Beaver. I helped establish Amp Fiddler and Detroit Beat Down Sounds. I was honored in 2003 at the Detroit Historical Museum’s tribute to Detroit Techno, for being one of the originators of Techno.

You have always been very critical about the sellout of Detroit Techno
in Europe. What do you think of the situation today?

To be underground, you need to give your music away for free. Anytime you sell your music, at any price, you become commercial. I wasn’t critical, I was trying to preserve the bastardization of our grooves and our historical black music. What I play as one of the originators of this style of music is Techno and TechnoSoul. Compared to what people call Techno in Europe, it’s a whole different ballgame. And that ballgame is soul-less. Some people shouldn’t make music, especially if there’s no soul to it.

What sounds can we expect from a DJ set of yours in 2007, more than 25
years after you started spinning records?

TechnoSoul, Baby!

another info about eddie fowlkes

Detroit's legendary Godfather of TechnoSoul, Eddie Flashin Fowlkes is back
with a new album Welcome to my World. Distributed by Submerge and due for
release in Europe Spring 2007, the 10 track album is a voyage through a
musical landscape encompassing funky grooves, electronica and breaks, all
wrapped up in the soulful yet industrial sound that is synonymous with
Detroit.

In many ways Detroit's unsung hero, Welcome to my World, EFF's first
artist album since 1996's Black TechnoSoul on Tresor Records, follows on
the back of last summer's docu-film Hi Tech Soul. The documentary,
(distributed by Plexi Films) narrating the birth and subsequent explosion
of Detroit's dance and electronic music scene confirms EFF's role as one
of the originators and heavy weights of the Detroit electronic sound
along with Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins.

It's been a long time since "Goodbye Kiss" and "Black TechnoSoul" A
European tour spanning London, Germany and Austria to promote his long
awaited album "WELCOME TO MY WORLD"
confirms that Detroit's Godfather of TechnoSoul, is back and bigger,
better and funkier than before.

The 10 track album is a seamless fusion of Detroit's finest electronic
house and techno with a good messure of soul and funk thrown into the mix.
Fowlkes deftly moves between tempos and styles to produce an audio journey
that straddles old and new.

"WELCOME TO MY WORLD" features some of Fowlkes best work yet and raises
again the question whether Fowlkes is the missing link between 70's
Detroit disco and techno.
